The Link Betwee Spam, SpamBots and Viruses Explained

Most Spam is sent from a network of "SpamBots", which are millions of computers that send Spam (and Viruses that turn other computers into SpamBots) without the owner even knowing about it. It's a chain reaction that snowballs as the network grows...
Most people see viruses as nothing more than an annoyance, but they don't realize is how closely connected Spam and viruses are. In fact the connection is so strong, that controlling one, is just as effective as controlling the other.
Every email that reaches your inbox has to start somewhere, so the chain starts with a single computer sending spam. If a computer sends too many emails, it will eventually be blacklisted as a spammer, so Spammers generally don't send any Spam from their own computers. That's where viruses come into play.
The first job of a Spammer is to send a virus to as many computers as possible with the sole purpose of taking control of them so they can be used to send spam. Viruses like these are completely silent, so most people won't even know they have it. They don't display popups or give you any visible sign they are there.
Within days, the Spammer will gain complete control of thousands of computers and immediately start using them to send even more mail, further expanding their SpamBot network of Spam Sending Machines. With each new computer added to their network, they make it harder and harder to be blacklisted, because there are so many computers spread across the world.
Once the Spammers network of SpamBots is large enough, they can send spam messages for everything from illegal products like prescription drugs to outright scams to steal money or your identity, and of course, more viruses that expand their SpamBot networks.
Once these computers are under their control, they can also be used for coordinated attacks on other computers, which is where this problem extends far beyond an annoyance. SpamBot networks are often used to attack government and corporate networks.
Because the links between, Spam, SpamBots, and Viruses are so strong, any improvement in controlling either Viruses or Spam will have an almost immediate effect on the other.
If Windows were as secure as Apple's iOS for example, both viruses and Spam would go away almost overnight.
