Why don't pet sheltered animal rights ads use positive images instead of depressing images of abuse?

I don't know about you, but every time I see one of those depressing pet shelter ads on TV I have to look away or change the channel. I'm sure they've done studies to show that ads featuring abused animals potentially bring in more donations, but they've gotten to the point where I simply can't stomach them anymore.

What they don't realize is that there have been quite a few studies that show that negative ads often have the effect of reinforcing bad behavior because it makes viewers see that bad behavior is more common than it is. The last thing we need is some idiot validating what he does to his pets, because he's not the only one who does it.

Laser Pointer Drone For Cats

Cats love laser pointers.

About 20 years ago, laser pointers were expensive tools used by savvy professors or other public speakers. Because they were so expensive, just the fact that the presenter used one in immediately gave the speaker a boost in credibility.

Eventually prices came down, but by then people stopped using them in presentations, so the demand dropped... until people eventually found a new use for them, entertaining cats. Cats simply can't resist the hypnotic spell of little red dot. They will chase the little bugger around until they are completely tired out. The trouble is, as the cat tires out, so does my arm from waving it around.

It's amazing how many people watch cat videos each day.

Let's face it, cat videos are addictive. Although some people won't admit it, millions of people watch them every day.

Cat videos are pretty unique. While some people spend a lot of time and money on high end cameras, lighting, and other effects to create a video that goes viral, anyone with a cat can get millions of views by using their cell phone to record their cat coughing up a hairball. That's incredible.

While it's hard to understand why cats coughing up hairballs would be popular, who can resist a video of a cat, dressed in a shark costume, chasing a small duck, while riding a Roomba vacuum cleaner?

Some cats love to be outside. The trouble is, you don't know when they are ready to come inside.

For more than a decade, I had a cat that loved to go outside. Just about every day, she would wander around for hours until she was ready to come back inside. When she was ready, she would do as most cats did. Wander over to the door and wait for somebody to notice she was there.

Sometimes my intuition told me she was past due, so I'd open the door and she would either be sitting there with her face inches from the door, or find her in her her favorite spot near the garage, napping until she heard the door open.

Why most smoke alarms are not pet friendly

Smoke alarms save lives. There's no doubt about it. But I think the majority of smoke alarms made today are poorly designed for people who have pets, for three reasons.

1. False alarms scare the daylights out of most pets

You know the scenario. You burned some toast and the alarm goes off. As you run for the broom, the dog runs for the hills.

2. When a battery runs low, most smoke alarms trigger high frequency chirps that scare many pets.

Since most smoke alarms only have one speaker, they use that speaker for the alarm... and to let you know the battery is weak. That short chirp scares my dogs so much I spend the next 20 minutes trying to find them as they hide under the beds, in closets and behind the washing... [More]
