It's not easy getting rid of personal items.

Many people find it hard getting rid of personal items because they're afraid they'll lose the memories that are attached to them. That's why so many people have closets, garages, and attics full of personal items.

I have to admit, I'm one of those people, but I'm starting to make progress. In the past couple of years, I've thrown out hundreds of plastic tote boxes full of objects that I've been saving since my childhood, simply because they remind me of my past. The root of the problem is the fact that so many of those objects remind me of places I've been, people I've known, and thing's I've done. Rent Your Yard For Other People's Garage Sales

The quickest way to get rid of stuff is a yard or garage sale. Unfortunately, a lot of people can't do that.

I love getting rid of stuff, but I've never been able to hold a yard sale, because there aren't many people passing my house on any given day. Meanwhile, houses on the block perpendicular to mine have incredible success whenever they hold a sale because that block gets a ton of traffic.

That's because the success or failure of a good garage or yard sale is based on 3 major factors: location, location, and location. First, you need a yard or garage. Swiffer Needs This...

I love the Swiffer, but I hate the snap away pole.

When Procter and Gamble introduced the Swiffer system, it was revolutionary. Instead of pushing around a dirty mop or broom, you start with a clean pad every time. When you're finished, you just toss the away the old pad, along with all the dirt. Brilliant. There's one problem. The snap together pole is pretty short and flimsy, especially for men.

I have to admit. The snap together pole was a brilliant idea, and it's how Procter and Gamble managed to draw attention to it in the first place, by giving them the ability to place the Swiffer Starter Kit in prime locations in the store, away from all the regular mops and brooms.

Got Clutter? Eliminate Duplicates

One of the easiest first steps towards eliminating clutter is getting rid of duplicates.

A lot of people who struggle with clutter have one thing in common, they have a lot of duplicate items, which means their first step is to simply eliminate the duplicates.

While it may be hard getting rid of one-of-a-kind items, it's far easier for you to justify getting rid of something you have two... or even more of. For example, I realized I had well over 50 USB charging cables in my home... and perhaps more than that. When you get right down to it, how many do you really need? Even if you want to keep two in each room of your house, you still wouldn't need 50, so I gave away or threw out at least 40 so far, and counting.

Do you know WHY most public restrooms STINK?

The simple answer is that people are filthy slobs, the actual answer is actually pretty simple. Even somebody who's NOT a slob can make a mess once in a while, and when they do, they have no way to clean up after themselves.

Think about it. When you use your bathroom at home, and you have a bit of an accident, you can reach under your sink and clean it up within seconds, but when you do the same thing in a public restroom, the only thing you have is toilet paper, and sometimes that's not enough.

What Was I Thinking? Urine Contains Ammonia. Ammonia and Bleach Can be Toxic.

I'm a science geek, but sometimes I ignore some of the basics.

On the surface, the facts seem so simple.

1. Pets pee.
2. Everyone hates the smell of urine.
3. Bleach kills germs and makes things clean.

Based on that, it's obvious why so many people grab the bleach when we clean up after our pets. The trouble with that it leaves out two very important scientific facts.

1. Urine contains ammonia.
2. You should never mix bleach and ammonia, because it produces toxic fumes.

Most people know you can't mix ammonia with bleach, and most people know urine contains ammonia, but even with those facts, I've been guilty of cleaning cat boxes and pet accidents with bleach.
