We all know why Darth Vader wore a helmet and a mask... but why does Kylo Ren wear a mask?
In the original Star Wars, Darth Vader needed his helmet and mask to survive. You could tell by the famous breathing that is not only provided protection, but also provided life support. So there's no question of it's purpose.
Kylo Ren is another story. He removes his helmet in some scenes, and wears it in others, so it's obviously not for life support, nor is it to hide his true identity, so why bother?
Another odd thing is that the mask itself is pretty beat up. What's up with that? I assume it's beat up from battle, but I'm sure Darth Vader saw a lot more battle than he did and he always has a brilliant shine to his helmet. If he's going to wear it, he might as well take care
