Better Liquid Waste Management

Throwing liquid waste into garbage cans doesn't make sense.

When I was in elementary school, we had a simple routine in our lunchroom for getting rid of our trash. First, we scrapped out our trays into the garbage, next we poured out any remaining milk into a bucket, before throwing out the container. It made sense. Why pour gallons of milk into a plastic bag?

Meanwhile, that's exactly what we do when we throw out our remaining drink at fast food restaurants. Doesn't it make sense that they offer some sort of drain where you can pour out the leftover soft drinks?

My main complaint is that all those liquids eventually leak out of the bags and lead to a smelly mess around the garbage container, not to mention from leaking garbage trucks that leave a trail of goop all arou... [More]

Don't PEE on Toilet Seats!

Some people are disgusting PIGS!

One of the most disgusting things about public restrooms is walking into a stall and finding that the entire toilet seat is covered with PEE. Why on earth is this so common? I used to think it was mainly from young kids who aren't mature enough to manage their bathroom routines, but I often see this in office buildings, where the only people using them are so-called "adults".

Can you imagine that? These are professional office workers who don't have the common sense to simply lift up the toilet seat before they pee. Why... Why... WHY?

The Solution to Dirty Public Restrooms

Public bathrooms STINK... but there's an easy solution!

We all know people can be disgusting pigs, but they're only PART of the problem. The real problem is that people have no way to clean up after themselves. The solution is as simple as giving bathroom patrons access to cleaning products.

I'm not suggesting that patrons are going to spend an hour cleaning a filthy bathroom, but the bottom line is that SOME of them will take the time to clean up after themselves when they make a mess, as long as they have the tools to do so. Without placing cleaning products in the bathroom, there's a zero percent chance they will do it.

Even if NOBODY cleaned up after themselves, EVERYONE will use those products to at least clean the toilet seat BEFORE sitting on it. That's a fact.... [More]

Trashy Cars?

Why don't cars have a place for you to put your trash?

If you have kids, or you do a lot of driving, chances are you accumulate a fair amount of trash each day from eating and drinking in the car. Unfortunately, most cars don't have anyplace to store your trash, so it ends up getting tossed around until you arrive at your destination.

I think cars should have optional trash containers to keep the trash from getting out of control. While you can't force your kids to use it, at least they won't give you the excuse that there wasn't anywhere to put it.

I hate when a Men's Room doesn't have dividers between the urinals.

I get it. Men's room urinals are meant to be more efficient. They're faster, use less water, and take up less space than a regular stall, but that doesn't mean they need to be on top of eachother. There should always be at least a small divider between each urinal. It's not hard to install, and it doesn't take up more than an inch of wall space.

Dividers not only give you a bit more privacy, but they protect you from any disgusting piss spraying from the guy next to you... especially from "The Shake".

You know what I'm talking about. That wonderful ritual where men make sure they get every drop so they don't make little pee spots on their pants. A good shake can probably go three feet in any dire... [More]

Why Soda Cans Should Always Have Covers

Do you know how many people touched your can of soda before you did?

Just about everything about the food industry is heavily regulated by the FDA to insure food cleanliness and safety, but somehow they don't seem to care much about the cleanliness of soda cans.

Think about it, long before you put a can of soda into your mouth, that can has potentially been touched by quite a few people, and it's likely been exposed to a variety of dirty places, yet there you rarely see any sort of seal on soda cans. Isn't that strange?

Hospital Bed Hand Sanitizers

Patients need clean hands too!

One of the first things you'll notice when you walk into any hospital or nursing home is that there are hand sanitizers everywhere. They're spread out every 20 feet or so in every hallway. They're next to elevators, bathrooms, vending machines, cafeterias and inside just about every patient's room.

With all those hand sanitizers, you would think that everyone in the building has clean hands. Not quite.

While it may be true that every staff member and visitor has clean hands, odds are just about every patient in the building has dirty hands.

I've spent a lot of time in hospitals and nursing homes and I've never seen one that pays attention to the cleanliness of patient's hands. That's pretty bad.

I've seen patients reach under b... [More]

No Carpets in Restaurants

LARGE-501

Carpets don't belong in restaurants.

The other day I went to a fast food restaurant that had carpets in the main dining area. To be honest, I didn't even notice it at first. I just sat down and started eating, until I started to notice an odd smell. I eventually realized the smell was coming from the carpet. It was not only smelling up the whole place, but it felt a bit sticky, like an old movie theater.

That's when I started to imagine how often food and drinks fall on the floor and soak into the carpet. Night after night, customers drop a little soda here and there, a few french fries, a pickle, maybe even a few dairy products. Then I picture the staff vacuuming the surface, and having it shampooed from time to time.

By contrast, restaurants with hard floors end ea

I don't care if dryers save energy in public bathrooms.

Whether you buy into all the hype about why dryers are better for the environment or not, the fact is many of us would rather use paper towels.

I don't want to hear about how paper towels kill trees. To me, that's nonsense, because every major paper towel manufacturer uses at least some recycled paper. Paper that is not from recycled sources is generally from paper mills that follow standards that plant multiple trees for every one they cut down. It's not only more responsible, but it's good business.

We can debate this and other reasons why dryers are "green", but there's still a lot of reasons why I hate them.

1. Some people, like me, like to wash their face too.

Bottle have caps. Cans have... nothing?

If you've ever had the pleasure of drinking a can of San Pellegrino Aranciata or Limonata, you just saw today's Idea of the Day in action. Every can of San Pellegrino comes with a removable foil cover to insure the top of the can remains clean.

Unlike bottled drinks that are covered until you open them, soda cans are always exposed. It's hard to believe there isn't any regulation that mandates that soda cans remain covered until purchased.

Why is it that San Pellegrino is the only major beverage company that realizes that many of their customers will be drinking directly from the can?

When you buy a can of soda from a deli, the can that you are about to put in your mouth has potentially travelled hundreds of miles in a di... [More]

Hand Cleaners Should Be In Every Restaurant

LARGE-278

Cleaning your hands before and after eating is not a new idea, but very few restaurants think about it.

Like most people when I'm home, I tend to wash my hands just before eating. It's almost automatic. I don't even need to list the benefits. The idea of washing your hands before eating has it's roots to traditions that are thousands of years old, long before people even understood the benefits of removing germs.

With that in mind, why are there so few restaurants that offer their customers an easy way to wash their hands, before or after eating?

The first place I ever visited that took hand washing seriously was a Japanese Hibachi restaurant. Once you were seated, the first thing they handed you wasn't an appetizer, but a dish with a hot towel. It made us not onl... [More]

All Cars Should Have Garbage Holders

LARGE-269

If so many people eat in the car, why don't you see more cars with garbage holders?

I remember back in the late 70s, you rarely saw cup holders in cars, but there were quite a few with garbage bins. We had two bins in a 1977 Cadillac, and they came in pretty handy when you had wrappers and other debris to get rid of.

As time went by, you started to see cup holders, but somehow garbage bins vanished, along with a few other handy things like window vents. I miss those too.

Once in a while you'll see a mini-van with garbage containers, but you rarely see them in cars. Anyone who's seen the mess kids make in mini-vans can understand why some mini-vans have garbage holders, but I think they're just as important in regular cars too.

When you buy something large, that comes... [More]

Eliminate Weekly Street Cleaning Days

LARGE-218

Have you noticed that some of the cleanest cities don't have any No Parking / Street Cleaning rules?

I've got news for you. Some of those cities not only manage to have clean streets, but some are actually cleaner than New York's streets.

Some of you are shaking your heads in disbelief, and asking... "How on earth can those cities possibly have clean streets when they don't force cars to scramble around and double park twice a week so that the street sweepers can clean them?"

Instead of the city sweeping the streets, the building owners do it.

I'm sure by now, some New Yorkers have passed out. I'll give you a moment to regain your composure and let this sink in. Relax. It's not the end of the world.

Believe it or not, if the city didn't sweep the curb in fr... [More]

We've all faced that moment where we walk into a restroom, and seconds later, we walk out without using it, even though we really needed it.

Yes. I'm venting again. I'm not complaining about how dirty public bathrooms are. We all know some that are good, and some that are pretty bad. What I'm venting about is that people are complaining, when there is a simple solution. Provide some bathroom cleaning products to the public a and let people clean up when needed.

People fall into two camps. They either blame the last person to use it, or they blame the management. The way I see it, it doesn't matter. If companies at least provided cleaning products, there's no doubt that the restrooms would be cleaner.

This reminds me of a classic moment on the Howard Stern Show,... [More]

Did you ever forget to take your wash out from the night before?... Hello, Mildew Stink!

It's been a long day, but you decide to do one more load of laundry before bed. All you need to do is move your load from the washer to the dryer and then it's off to bed.

Somehow it slips your mind. You fall asleep and in the morning you dart off to work. Lunchtime comes and you get some ketchup on your shirt, and just then, you realize your damp laundry is still in the wash from the night before!

By the time you get home from work, your laundry has "That Smell" and a scattering of dark mildew spots. You run the wash through again, but since it wasn't a white load, you can't bleach out the stains and there's still a bit of the mildew odor. There are a variety of ways to get... [More]

Can you take off your shoes?

Here's a simple idea that you don't see around. Instead of asking your guests to take OFF their shoes, why not ask them to put a slipper OVER their shoes?

Think about it. What you really want is a clean floor. Right?

Why not have a simple system guests can use to quickly snap something over their shoes.

It's not rocket science.

As a bonus, guests potentially with smelly, dirty socks with holes, or dirty bare feet with a bad case of Athlete's Foot will avoid the embarrassment of rubbing their stinkers all over your new carpet.
