Idea Of The Day. A new Idea Each Day. Some Don't Suck.

We post an all new idea every day. If you find an idea you like... do something about it. Make it happen.

Why are there so many spam comments about free music on YouTube?

I'm not sure why, but somehow I've been getting a ton of spam lately about royalty free music as comments on my YouTube Channel. Why is that? Am I the only one who noticed? Are other people getting them too? Just curious.

Leave a comment on my YouTube Channel... I'd love to know what you think.

Our 100,000th View on YouTube!

This week marks an important milestone for Idea of the Day... Our 100,000th view on YouTube!

My original goal for IDEAOFTHEDAY.COM was simply to create a daily video blog (vlog), where I could put my ideas out there, and have some fun. It wasn't easy, and I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, so it took me a while to create anything more than a "Coming Soon" page, which sat there for quite a few years.

As years passed by, as I tinkered with all sorts of camera and other technical gear, I made the decision to launch the site without any videos. After all, it was still an idea site, so I posted a new idea each day for a couple of years until I finally decided it was time to make my videos. That's when things started to really take off.

Once again, it wasn't easy. In addit... [More]

You've Gotta Have Thick Skin...

The Internet. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be careful what we post.

I don't know why, but the Internet has the ability to turn the most innocent people into Internet Trolls. Within minutes of posting ANYTHING publicly on social media, you're guaranteed to see an endless stream of insults from people you've never met, and even some from people you know. Relax. Don't take it personal. That's how the Internet Works.

The strange thing about it is that most of these comments come from people who would never dream of saying something negative to you in person, but the pseudo anonymity of the Internet somehow brings out the worst in people.

The trick is learning to entirely ignore the negative comments, or you'll end up in an endless... [More]

Why do so many YouTubers beg you to Like, Share, Comment, and Subscribe?

You just watched this great video of a cat dressed up like a shark, riding around on a Roomba vacuum, chasing a baby duck. Now what do you do? Most people don't do anything at all. They either pick another video, go to another website, or just get back to work.

While there's nothing wrong with that, if you liked the video, what you really should do is return the favor by simply clicking Like, Share, Comment, and / or Subscribe to the channel. It only takes a fraction of a second, but it really makes a big difference to to people who posted the video.

YouTube is free, so you can watch as many videos as you like without paying a cent, but taking that one extra step by clicking one of the Like, Share,... [More]

YouTube Needs a Dynamic Bumper Feature

YouTube should have a way for creators to dynamically insert bumpers before and after our clips.

Just about everyone who posts videos to YouTube on a regular basis inserts some sort of bumper at the end of each clip where they talk a bit about their channel, and how to find their web site or how to subscribe or follow them on social media. This is often called a Bumper or End Card.

As it stands right now, the only way to create a Bumper or End Card is to make it part of the video itself, so whatever you post will be forever linked to the specific video it was attached to.

The trouble with that is the information in the Bumper may become outdated, but since its part of the video itself, it can't be changed. So if your website changes, or you get a new social media account,... [More]

REAL YouTube Age Ratings?

Why doesn't YouTube have a REAL Age Rating System?

YouTube has exactly 2 ratings. If you check a box that says "Age Restricted" when you upload your video, it's considered for adults, otherwise, it's not. That's not enough.

Very few people check the "Age Restricted" box because it turns off monetization, so there are literally billions of videos online that are not suitable for children, and there is no way for parents to filter them out.

YouTube needs a REAL ratings system that's similar to TV, Games and Movies, that let people know exactly what to expect BEFORE they play a video.

If you've ever been unable to post comments on YouTube because of the error message "Comment Failed to Post", this is what to do.

There's a bug in YouTube that pops up every now and then that prevents people from posting comments. Although it will let you type in your comment, you can't post it. All you see is a little red sentence that says "Comment Failed to Post.". It doesn't tell you why, or offer any help whatsoever.

The first few times I saw the message, I just gave up and tried again later and it worked, so I just assumed it was a connection problem. As the message kept coming up I decided to do some research and all I could find were a bunch of videos from frustrated people who were just as confused as me, and in some cases they assumed they were being censored bec... Re-Thinking YouTube's New Monetization Rules.

There's a lot of buzz in the YouTube community over a series of new changes to their monetization rules.

One of the great things about YouTube is that it allows people to earn money from advertising that runs with the videos they create. In some cases, it's a simple banner ad that appears on the bottom of the video as it plays. In other cases, it's a full-fledged video commercial that runs before the video starts.

What that translates to is a decent income for video creators who've built a large subscriber base. While the income can vary substantially between videos, the rule of thumb is you can expect about $1 or $2 per every thousand videos viewed. For a young channel like Idea Of The Day, that works out to about $15 per month, but for a channel with millions of views, i... [More]

Some people use hashtags... and some people don't. Why is that?

One of the strange things about social media is the widespread use of hashtags. If you take a random sampling of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest posts, you'll notice that almost half of them have two or more hashtags, and the rest don't have ANY at all.

If you look for a pattern, you'll discover that the posts WITHOUT hashtags tend to be from the most popular accounts, which may give you the impression that you don't need to use them either. Unfortunately, if you want people to actually see your posts, that's not a good idea.

The reason popular accounts don't use hashtags is that they already have a big following, so they don't need to use hashtags to attract people to their posts. By contrast, p... [More]

The TRUTH About Earning Money on YouTube

People often ask me if I can teach them how to make money on YouTube.

The good news is that you can actually earn money on YouTube. The bad news is that very few people earn more than a few dollars.

As a rule of thumb, you can earn about $1 or so for each 1,000 views, which means that if you get 10,000 views, you'll earn about $10.

So, if you do the math, for you to quit your day job, you need to get about 1,000 views for each dollar you need to earn each day. Want to earn $500 per day? That translates into getting 500,000 views of your videos... each day. Bottom line: Don't quit your day job unless you've got a LOT of subscribers... AND some kick ass videos.

You should keep in mind the last word of the previous paragraph... "Videos", plural, which means that e... [More]

The Power of the Back Catalog

A lot of aspiring YouTube creators give up too soon because their audience is too small.

Creating a new YouTube channel isn't easy. You need to have the courage to consistently produce quality content, even though there's a strong chance nobody will see it. Yes, I mean NOBODY.

Each day, millions of new videos are uploaded to YouTube, which means that when a new video goes up, there's virtually no chance it will be featured or suggested to potential viewers. There's a lot of competition out there, and YouTube isn't going to promote a video from an unknown channel, so even if you've put your heart and soul into your first videos, there's very little chance they will reach anyone outside your friends and family.

Unfortunately, this is why so many YouTube creators give up s... [More]

Thank You Internet Trolls!

I get a kick out of negative feedback... and I LOVE IT!

My YouTube Channel Gets a Lot of Feedback... Thankfully, most of it is positive, but like anything else on the Internet, there's always a certain amount of negative comments. That said, I love ALL of them, even the bad ones.

Sure, I love when somebody writes something like "Cool", or "I Love it!", but I get just as excited about such classics as "He looks like Jon Lovitz dressed up as Spock looking like the Fonz" or my all-time favorite... "your stupid". It's not that I'm sitting around waiting for an Internet Troll to make fun of me, it's just that getting a comment, ANY comment is far better than being ignored.

The biggest problem with a new YouTube Channel is being ignored completely, when I get feedback, ANY feedb... [More]

Have you ever wondered why some YouTube videos are more popular than others?

From time to time I look at the statistics on my YouTube Channels and I'm often surprised when some of my more obscure videos get a lot of traffic, as compared to videos I assumed were my best efforts. The truth is, I shouldn't be surprised at all. Certain videos are simply more likely to catch on than others, so I decided to prove that point with a little social experiment.

The experiment is pretty simple. I posted two videos today and both have fundamentally the same script. In fact, they are the same script, word for word, with one simple difference. Both are listed on YouTube as Idea of the day #207. Since both have the same words, and both are being posted the same day, you might expect the... [More]

Behind The Scenes: Green Screen Tips

People often ask me about the background in my YouTube videos. Here's how it's done.

Since I get so many comments on my YouTube channel asking me if I've actually recorded my vlogs on the set of Star Trek, Seinfeld, or The Brady Bunch, I'd like officially admit that I use a green screen.

Of course, some of the backgrounds I use are pretty obviously fake, such as inside the Millennium Falcon, others like the living room from "Risky Business" look pretty realistic, so for the record, even those are fake too.

So here's a quick look behind the scenes, along with some simple tips. I'll be posting a more detailed video showing exactly how it's done at a later date.

Here's a quick way YouTube Creators can organize multiple clips without creating separate files for each take.

When I first started creating YouTube videos, one of the hardest things was trying to organize my footage. This is particularly useful when all your clips look the same in the thumbnail, and you're looking for a specific clip.

Whether you're trying to shoot a bunch of daily videos like I do, or you simply want to make one video with a lot of separate clips, it's important that you at least create some kind of numbered shot list, so that you at least know the sequence of your clips. In my case, I go one extra step, as you can see in the video, by holding up cards with large numbers written on them to match the shot list.

This isn't too different from what movie ma... [More]

Some YouTube Channels have way too much variety.

What YouTube needs is a way for people to subscribe to individual Playlists.

My old YouTube Channel was pretty diverse. I had videos with camera tips, product reviews, technology, science and even home movies all in one channel. That means that if somebody subscribed to my Channel because they liked a camera review, they're getting everything else too.

By letting people subscribe to playlists, subscribers can get just the types of content they want, without subscribing to the whole channel.

So if somebody was only interested in my camera tips, they would only get notified when I post a new camera tip... not when I ramble on about why Princess Leia didn't give Chewb... [More]

Why doesn't YouTube have an option to move videos between channels?

I have more than one YouTube Channel. I didn't plan it that way. Like many people, I started out with one channel, and I didn't really have any particular theme to the videos I posted.

So as it stands, my original channel, "CouponPages" has no particular theme. It's loaded with vacation videos, camera tips, product reviews and just about anything else, so I decided it would be a good idea to separate the videos into their own dedicated channels for each subject. The trouble is, YouTube doesn't offer a way for people to do that. The only way to move videos from one channel, and put them into another is to re-upload them, and delete the originals, which means they lose whatever search rank and view counts th... [More]

Sometimes the audio is all you need.

For those times when all you really need is the audio, it's a shame to waste all that bandwidth playing the video portion too. In fact, many people use YouTube just to listen to playlists of music videos. Unfortunately, in order to listen to the music, you need to keep the screen turned on, and you can't run another App without stopping the music.

Although Internet bandwidth is getting dirt cheap, it's not free, and videos drain batteries faster than audio alone. So, why give people the option to turn off the video portion and just listen to the audio?

The obvious reason they block people from playing audio in the background is so they can see the advertising. The fact is, people who use YouTube for music won't see the ads anywa... [More]
