The Power of the Back Catalog

A lot of aspiring YouTube creators give up too soon because their audience is too small.
Creating a new YouTube channel isn't easy. You need to have the courage to consistently produce quality content, even though there's a strong chance nobody will see it. Yes, I mean NOBODY.
Each day, millions of new videos are uploaded to YouTube, which means that when a new video goes up, there's virtually no chance it will be featured or suggested to potential viewers. There's a lot of competition out there, and YouTube isn't going to promote a video from an unknown channel, so even if you've put your heart and soul into your first videos, there's very little chance they will reach anyone outside your friends and family.
Unfortunately, this is why so many YouTube creators give up so quickly. Day after day, they check out their view counters and realize that it's a lot harder than they thought to get people to watch their videos.
The first step is to ignore the view counts, and consistently produce the best possible videos that you can. This step is critical.
Although it may sound counter productive to spend time and energy on videos meant for such a small audience, the reality is your real audience is in the FUTURE.
Sooner or later you at least SOME of your videos will find an audience, and some of them will not only subscribe, but browse your BACK CATALOG, and that's when things get interesting.
When somebody watches your latest video, chances are they aren't likely to subscribe based on that one video alone. Most people make their choice to subscribe based on looking at your Back Catalog and seeing the kinds of videos you produce. The better the Back Catalog, the more likely they will be to subscribe and check out your old videos.
Although some of my early videos had fewer than a dozen views when I first uploaded them, some of them have since grown into thousands. As of this date, I've had over 41,000 views, and a lot of them are from new viewers checking out my Back Catalog.
Back Catalogs are important in other industries too, as people discover the previous works of authors and artists months or years after their first published works. Dan Brown became famous because of The Da Vinci Code, but that wasn't his first (or best) book. Billy Joel and John Cougar Mellencamp had several albums out before their breakthrough hits.
To get the most out of your Back Catalog, be sure to post some of your best work into Best-Of playlists so new viewers can see them.
