If I gave you a pen and asked you to write your name on a piece of paper, I would know within seconds if you were right or left handed. This is because the thought of using the opposite hand for something as complex as writing is simply out of the question. Our brains simply favor one hand over the other.
For the same reason, many of our other brain functions favor one side over the other, which can have a major effect on our personality.
