The TRUTH About Earning Money on YouTube

People often ask me if I can teach them how to make money on YouTube.
The good news is that you can actually earn money on YouTube. The bad news is that very few people earn more than a few dollars.
As a rule of thumb, you can earn about $1 or so for each 1,000 views, which means that if you get 10,000 views, you'll earn about $10.
So, if you do the math, for you to quit your day job, you need to get about 1,000 views for each dollar you need to earn each day. Want to earn $500 per day? That translates into getting 500,000 views of your videos... each day. Bottom line: Don't quit your day job unless you've got a LOT of subscribers... AND some kick ass videos.
You should keep in mind the last word of the previous paragraph... "Videos", plural, which means that even if you can't get a 500,000 views per day on any ONE video, you can still reach a decent amount of income by having a large enough "Back Catalog of YouTube Videos". This changes the math quite a bit. There are quite a few video creators who make a comfortable living even without having any one particular video reaching "Viral" status. They get 5000 or so views on a typical video, but they have LOTS of videos. I've seen channels with THOUSANDS of videos, which means that if each of those videos gets dozens or hundreds of views per day, it can add up.
That said, you need to keep in mind it's an uphill battle. Each day, millions of videos are posted to YouTube, which means that there is a ton of competition. You need to do everything you can to gain subscribers and build an audience, or your videos will never be seen.
My advice is to forget the idea of making ANY money with your YouTube Channel. Just do it for the enjoyment of it.
The bottom line is that if you're only doing it to make money, you're doomed to failure. If you focus on having fun and creating something you can be proud of, there's a CHANCE you'll make something from it, but even if you don't, at least you'll have fun doing it.
My Idea of the Day Channel is only 6 months old and it makes about $15 per month. Clearly, I'm not doing it for the money, but it's a quite a bit more than it earned in the first month or so, when it earned about 30 cents per month.
