DRIVING with Bumper Guards is STUPID!

What's the deal with all those stupid Bumper Guards?
Why are so many people DRIVING with Bumper Guards?
So let me get this straight. People buy these ugly looking things to put on their bumpers so that other cars won't scratch them. Meanwhile, the bumper guards are 1000 times uglier than the scratches they were designed to prevent. Brilliant. Meanwhile, I see DRIVING with them every day throughout New York City and it makes me scratch my head and wonder how the heck they became so popular.... and WHY don't they TAKE THEM OFF them when they drive?
It reminds me of the days when people put plastic on their couches to keep them from looking dirty.
As a New Yorker, I can totally understand the concept behind the idea itself. You get back to your car and notice a brand new scratch almost every day, so the idea of protecting it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that people don't just put them on when they park their cars, they leave them on 24/7, so you see them flapping away as they DRIVE through traffic. Don't they understand you're supposed to remove them when you drive?
If you're going to leave them on all the time, you're defeating the purpose. Instead of a few scratches that you can only see at close range, you've effectively made your bumper look ugly as hell, full time.. AND You're probably creating more scratches as they flap around when you drive.
