Local Attached, External Cloud Backup Invention

I love cloud backup, but it's slow and takes up too many resources.
There are countless advantages to using a cloud backup service, however, speed isn't one of them. Cloud backups are notoriously slow, in some cases taking weeks or even months to make the initial backup. Conversely, local backups take only a matter of minutes. Here's an idea for an invention that gives you the advantages of both.
My idea is a to combine the two into a single, external drive. When the drive is connected, you can use it like any other hard drive, as either primary storage, or as a backup. In either case, the drive would be blazing fast.
Unlike a traditional external drive, this drive would also have a WiFi or Ethernet LAN port, so it can be connected to the Internet and handle your cloud backups independently from the computer itself. So, you get nearly instant access to all your files, and your external drive transfers the files to the cloud in the background, without using ANY computer resources, even when it's disconnected. In fact, when it's disconnected from the computer, it can devote all it's own resources to transferring your files to the cloud.
I've seen a few high end NAS boxes out there that let you install cloud services like DropBox, but these devices are connected via slower network connections. What we need is one that uses a high speed direct connection like USB 3, or Thunderbolt to make the local connection. This would clearly give you the best of both worlds.
