Here's a Simple Way to Know When Your Cat Comes Home.

Some cats love to be outside. The trouble is, you don't know when they are ready to come inside.
For more than a decade, I had a cat that loved to go outside. Just about every day, she would wander around for hours until she was ready to come back inside. When she was ready, she would do as most cats did. Wander over to the door and wait for somebody to notice she was there.
Sometimes my intuition told me she was past due, so I'd open the door and she would either be sitting there with her face inches from the door, or find her in her her favorite spot near the garage, napping until she heard the door open.
For anyone with a cat that likes to go out, this is a pretty common scenario. You get up every half hour or so, look around, call the cat by name, make silly noises, shake a toy or wave a laser pointer around trying to get her attention so you wouldn't have to keep popping out looking for her.
Here's a simple solution... a motion detector outside the door that triggers a bell.
Technically, the parts to make such a device are off-the-shelf, but I don't think anyone has made a product specifically for this purpose. I think this is a perfect opportunity for somebody to make such a product.
I think such a product doesn't even need to be hard-wired to the house. In fact, it could be embedded into a small decorative statue you can put outside the door when you let the cat out. Once the cat comes back in, you can turn it off and take it back inside to extend the battery. Another bonus of putting out a little statue whenever the cat is still out is that it reminds family members who come home that the cat is still outside.
Inside the house would be a simple receiver.
