Commercial TV Should Be FREE

How did we get to the point where we pay for commercial TV?
This one boggles my mind. Back in the old days, TV was free. It was pretty simple. The networks made millions off the commercials, so there was no reason to charge people to watch. The only exception was a small percentage of people in remote areas who paid a small fee for cable TV, because they were too far to get regular over the air reception.
It also made sense when HBO introduced the first premium subscription commercial free channel. Without commercials, it was perfectly clear why they charged for the service. Very simple to understand.
Somehow we've reached a point where the typical cable TV bill is over $100, and nearly every channel has commercials.
Every few years, at least one of the major networks will make a bing sink about how they are not getting paid enough from the cable companies, so they demand an increase. This tug-of-war between the cable companies and the networks almost always translates into the price for basic cable going up.
Naturally, both sides blame each other for the increase, but to me the real issue that any channel that has commercials should be completely free. It doesn't make sense that a channel getting paid to run commercials should expect even a penny from viewers. Considering how many commercials they run, they should pay us.
