DropBox Box - A Local Backup With Cloud

The cloud is wonderful, but it's still slow
The benefits of a cloud backup are crystal clear. You just back up your files to the cloud, and viola... all your important files are safely stored in the cloud. However, cloud backups take a long time to complete and the backup software ties up your computer too much. For some people, their first cloud backup takes months to complete. The result is your computer runs slower, and it needs to be on all the time.
Wouldn't it be easier if we just plugged in an external drive that has it's own Internet connection that backs up whatever is stored in it to the cloud?
The concept is very simple. When your computer is on, you use the external drive just like any other high speed backup device, however the device remains powered on even after you turn off your computer, so it can continue to communicate with the cloud.
By using this system, your local computer isn't tied up moving files back and forth to the cloud, which makes it faster.
Keep in mind, this not only simplifies backups, but it also makes restoring and syncing files drastically easier. This means you could start off with a brand new (empty) drive, enter your cloud id and password, and the external drive takes care of the details. Within a short time, and without even turning on your computer, all your backed up files will be restored to the drive.
This would also be great for Apple's Time Capsule, allowing it to send your latest backups to iCloud without tying up your computer, or even turning it on.

So simple... why don't we see drives that do this?
That's how cloud backups should work. Copy your files to an external drive, then let the external drive copy the data to the cloud, even while the computer is off.
