Don't Throw Away Silica Packets. They Come In Handy Around The House.

Why do Silica Gel packets say "Throw Away", when they're so useful?
There are a lot of products today that are shipped with Silica Gel packets inside the box that say "Silica Gel - THROW AWAY- DO NOT EAT" on the wrapper. The main purpose these packets is to absorb moisture, so they keep whatever they are shipping dry, which is especially important when shipping electronics.
Since they look a lot like a packet of sugar, I can understand why they write "DO NOT EAT" on the side, but there's no reason why they also say "THROW AWAY" too, especially since they're so handy around the house. I've been saving them for years to keep things like tools, cameras and other things free of humidity, and I never run out of places to use them.
For example, if you have important documents, old video tapes, or other items you want to preserve, put a bunch of packets in a box or a fire safe and the Silica Gel will prevent moisture from degrading them or causing mold or mildew.
Silica Gel packets are often used to fix devices that accidentally fell into water. All you need to do is put the device into a sealed jar full of Silica Packets. By the next day, the Silica Gel will absorb most of the moisture and you can turn it back on. I keep a jar full of Silica Gell specifically for this purpose. I've fixed quite a few devices for people this way.
If you read my previous post about saving money on razor blades you might remember that the main objective is to keep the blades as dry as possible. Moisture oxidizes the blades and shortens their lifespan. Keeping them dry can make a big difference.
Another common use for Silica Gel is keeping your tools from getting rusty in your garage or basement. Just pop a few packets in your toolbox and shut the lid.
