Why Not Take a Chance on Faith?

I recently saw this video of Jim Carrey doing the Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM Graduation, and it struck a chord, so I thought I'd share it here today.
It's an inspirational speech, and it's been seen nearly 10 million times on YouTube.
My favorite quote is around the 23 minute mark:
"Why not take a chance on faith?
Not religion but faith.
Not hope but faith.
I don't believe in hope.
Hope is a beggar.
Hope walks through the fire.
Faith leaps over it."
To be honest, I didn't tune into the speech expecting words of wisdom. He's a comedian. I tuned in to hear a few laughs and I ended up re-playng parts of it because it was so well said.
The thing that resonated most was the concept that Faith and Hope are not interchangeable. There's a huge difference between hoping for something, and having faith in something.
If you ask a child what they are want to be when they grow up, they're likely to say "I'm going to be a doctor". Ask a high school student the same thing and they might say "I hope to be a doctor some day". Do you see the difference?
I think young children are born with faith, but somehow they settle for hope as they get older.
To a child, they ARE going to be a doctor. They ARE going to be a dancer or a baseball player. As the years pass, they start hoping for things. They hope they get a good job. They hope they can write a novel some day. They hope they can get the sports car they had their eye on. They hope. They hope. They hope.
As Jim Carrey says "Hope is a beggar". You don't need hope. You need faith.
Faith is saying "I'm going to write that novel.", or "I'm getting that sports car."
Faith eliminates doubt. Faith eliminates fear. Faith clears a path from where you are, to where you want to me. By surrendering hope, your mind opens up possibilities you never dreamed possible, and that leads to delivering the happiness you deserve.
