Screen Savers Are Cute, But Useless

Maybe we should call them "Away Screens"
One of the strangest things about today's computers is that they still have "Screen Savers" even though they don't have anything to do with saving your screen.
Other than taking up space, looking cute, slowing down your computer, and wasting electricity, they don't do anything at all.
It wasn't always that way. There was a time when Screen Savers were an absolute necessity because in the early days of computing, one of the biggest problems was that screens were easily damaged whenever the same image was displayed for a long period of time.
If an image remained in the same spot too long, the coating would wear out unevenly, leaving behind a burned in image where the image used to be. Eventually programmers realized that they could avoid the burn-in problem by randomly moving text or images around whenever you walked away for too long.
Screen savers are no longer necessary because today's monitors are based on entirely new technology that is not sensitive to showing static images, but people still use them, mainly for entertainment purposes.
If you really want to extend the life of your monitor, disable your screen saver and set it to turn off when it's inactive.
Not only will this extend the life of your computer and monitor, it will save electricity.
