Why Do Stormtroopers Wear Useless Armor in Star Wars? It Doesn't Do Anything!

Stormtroopers in Star Wars are like Redshirts in Star Trek. They drop like flies.
Have you ever wondered why the Imperial Stormtroopers in Star Wars wear useless armor? Anyone who's ever seen the movies know the armor doesn't seem to offer any sort of protection, especially from things like blasters.
You would think that all that armor would have some kind of purpose other than making them look cool. The rebels don't wear armor, and there's a good reason for that. Stormtrooper armor is bulky, inflexible, and of course, useless.
There's even a scene in the original Star Wars where Luke Skywalker says "I can't see a thing in this helmet." The line was originally an ad lib because Mark Hamill acknowledged just how hard it was to see out of the helmet. So, not only is the armor useless against laser blasters, and just about any other weapon, but it gets in the way of actually fighting.
They should include at least one scene in the new movies where somebody like Finn explains the benefits or function of the armor to appease people like me who wonder about such things.
They took the first step with Episode VII, The Force Awakens, where Finn talks a bit about how the helmets have an air filter. Naturally, in spite of this one bit of actual functionality, he also points out it doesn't filter out the deadly gas he was planning on releasing. So much for finding at least one functional benefit.
Either way, at least they look cool. But I still wonder if there are a bunch of guys in red shirts under there.
