Why R2-D2's Memory Wasn't Erased in the Star Wars Prequels

They erased C-3PO's memory at the end of Episode III... Why not R2-D2?
One of the more interesting things about the Star Wars Prequels is that at the end of The Reveng of the Sith, they made it a point of saying they would have C-3PO's memory erased, but they made no mention whatsoever of R2-D2. The two droids were standing side by side when they made that decision, so you would think that they would ask for both to be erased.
R2-D2 clearly saw everything C-3PO saw, and can definitely communicate. It may come across as nothing but beeps and whistles, but many people and droids in the Star Wars Universe seem to be able to understand him, and he can easily communicate by way of plugging into various computer banks.
There was a very big reason why his memory wasn't erased. R2-D2 is quite literally, the CENTER of the entire Star Wars Saga.
As strange as this may sound, it's true. According to George Lucas, the entire Star Wars Saga is taken from an ancient book called "The Journal of the Whills", which was written by an eyewitness to the struggle between The Jedi and The Sith.
As such, he decided that the author of the Journal would have to be somebody who could span multiple generations, such as a Droid, and that Droid is non other than R2-D2.
With R2-D2 as the narrator of the story, it became essential that R2-D2 (and his memory) survive the entire Saga. If his memory was erased, he wouldn't have been able to write the story in the first place.
Some say that this is also one reason why R2-D2 always seemed to be the unsung hero of each film. If you look closely at every film, there is at least one scene where R2-D2 saves the day. What author wouldn't make themselves the hero?
