Statistics Can't Lie?

I have a hard time trusting statistics. Numbers can't lie, but the people interpreting them can.

I have a hard time trusting statistics, because I've seen how often people twist the results, to prove their point.

For example, some of the most successful drugs in the world are cholesterol lowering Statins, which statistically improve your chance of avoiding a heart attack by 33%, or at least that's what the drug companies would like you to believe.

The trouble with that statistic is it only tells half of the story, because when you look at the raw data, what you find is that people taking Statins lowered their chance of getting a heart attack by only 1%. Hey... Shoe Makers... Ever Heard of a Ruler?

What's the deal with extra long shoelaces?

It drives me nuts when I get a new pair of shoes and the laces are way too long. Why on earth would they do that? You end up with laces that literally drag on the ground unless you tie a double knot. Don't they know how to measure?

Look, I'm sure there are some people out there that like long laces, but for the most part, most of us simply want to tie our shoes the old fashioned way, with one simple not, so why not include normal sized laces? For the small number of people who actually prefer long laces, let them buy their own laces and go to town and let the rest of us have normal laces.

Just Call it Star Wars

I hate when people call the original Star Wars "A New Hope"!

When Star Wars was released in 1977, it had only one name, "Star Wars". When The Empire Strikes Back was released, audiences were caught off guard when the opening titles began with "Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back". This immediately implied that the first movie was actually Episode IV, and that there were 3 missing parts that would eventually proceed it.

Regardless of this revelation, for all practical purposes, Star Wars was still... Star Wars, until they eventually released the original movie on VHS and they felt compelled to slap an "Episode IV" on it to make it official. While I can understand that, they also slipped in a new title "A New Hope".

Why does a big company like Oracle use such sleazy tactics to take advantage of people?

Oracle's Java is everywhere, even though you never see it. For the most part, it's an invisible technology that lives behind the scenes, so unless you're a programmer, you won't even need to know it's there. That is, of course, until you get a notice telling you that your Java is out of date.

As a behind-the-scenes technology, you would think that getting the latest version of Java would be something harmless, but it's not, because Oracle decided to use sleazy techniques to try to earn some additional revenue by installing bogus add-ons and hijacking your default search engine.
