Understanding Essentially Unessential Essentials

Just because something says it's Essential, doesn't mean it is.
Have you noticed how many products claim to have "Essential" ingredients? Unfortunately, a lot those Essential Ingredients aren't actually... Essential. Let me explain.
When it comes to packaging, the term "Essential" has several meanings, depending on the product, but for the most part, we can break it down two ways. In the context of vitamins, an Essential Vitamin is a vitamin that your body needs to get directly from food and/or supplements, because it's not something it can "manufacture" on it's own.
For example, although Vitamin D3 is a vitamin that is essential to your health, it's not considered an "Essential Vitamin" because your body can actually manufacture it from other nutrients. In the case of Vitamin D3, whenever your body needs it, your skin can convert cholesterol into D3 by exposing it to the sun (that's one reason many people have lower cholesterol in the summer). The same is true of Vitamin A, which your body can convert from beta-carotene.
Essential Minerals are another story. As a rule of thumb, your body can't "make" most minerals, so they're considered essential, but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to supplement most of them, but there are clearly some that are essential, and are less prevalent in your diet. For example, women need higher amounts of Iron, because they lose some every month when they have their period.
That brings us to "Essential Oils". This one is the strangest of them all. A company can call their product an "Essential Oil" simply because it captures the smell or "Essence" of the plant. This means that although Sandalwood Oil is an essential oil, that doesn't mean that it's essential that you buy moisturizers or other skin care products that contain it.
