UPDATED: The Walmart in Woodbridge, which inspired this post now has ZERO working scanners
As it turns out, I went back to the Walmart that inspired me to write this post on Saturday, and once again I had to find a price for something. Remembering that there was only one working scanner in the store on the opposite side, I started walking in that direction, only to discover that it was gone. So, I did a 360 degree walk through the entire store looking for one that worked.
I finally decided to just ask somebody where I could find a price checker. She shook her head and simply said "we don't have any." She pointed out that I could go to the customer service counter and ask them to check a price, but that would naturally require me to wait on a long line. I put the items back, except two items, which I had them scan at the register. One turned out to be much lower than I expected, so I kept it, the other was twice what I thought, so I had them put it back.
I realize things break, but there should be backups. If the backups break, replace them with new backups and work on designing a new version that's more durable.
