Live Long... And Prosper.

You don't have to be a fan of Star Trek to recognize those iconic words.
I can't help but think of those words today, as news spread about the loss of Leonard Nimoy at the age of 83.
To me, of all the lines used in Star Trek, "Live Long, and Prosper" is the one that has the greatest meaning, because it's a message of peace and good will towards your neighbor. In a sense, it's the Golden Rule as interpreted by a peaceful race of people living on the imaginary planet of Vulcan.
Leonard Nimoy's "Spock" had a lot of influence on me growing up. He was a man of logic and curiosity, yet because he was half human, he also had depth. Under his logical exterior was a man of character, passion and loyalty. For science and computer geeks like me, Spock was a perfect role model.
Back in the 80s, my brother asked me to be the Best Man at his wedding. At one point, someone leaned over to me and said "Since you're the Best Man, it's time for you to do the toast". A toast? Me? It was the first wedding I ever attended. I had no idea what to say, a minute or so later, I lifted a glass of champaign, and said the only thing that came to mind, I simply said "As Mr. Spock would say, may they Live Long and Prosper!". That's it. That was the whole toast. Nothing more. Just "Live Long, and Prosper".
I honestly never knew that the Best Man was supposed to prepare a toast, and if I was going to say something, I knew it had to be meaningful, and to me, those words truly captured what I felt in my heart. When you think about it, to this day, I can't think of a single way to improve on it. I wanted them to "Live Long, and Prosper", it says it all. A long, happy life, full of abundance.
Decades later, he showed me that he remembered that toast when he toasted me at my 40th birthday. He raised his glass and said "May he live long, and Prosper".
Clearly, those words will live long, and inspire generations to prosper.
Rest In Peace, Leonard Nimoy. As George Takei said today "Leonard Nimoy truly did live long and prosper..."

I knew you would write something about Leonard Nimoy
When I heard the news, I thought you would have something to say about him.
PS... Nice shirt! Where'd you get it?

It was the logical thing to do.
What else would you expect?
