Modular Cell Phones - Smartphones With Interchangeable Parts

For people who love to tinker.
Sometimes when I sit down to write about one of my "Original" ideas, I find out that it's not original. While some people might think that would upset me, it actually makes me feel great, because it only serves to validate the idea. This is one of those ideas.
I recently updated my phone to the latest iPhone 6 Plus. The main reason was that I love photography, and the newest model has a lot of improvements to the camera itself... besides, my iPhone 5 camera has something wrong with the lens, so it's not as clear as it used to be.
The point is, just because I wanted the new camera, I upgraded the whole phone. So, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if I could just upgrade the camera?
That's where this idea started.
While it's nearly impossible to think that Apple would release a modular iPhone, it made sense that it would be pretty easy to make an Android phone that used a modular design. All it would take is a series of frames in various sizes, with places to drop in the components you want to use. This wouldn't be that different from what phone makers already do in-house, whenever they try the latest components.
With a modular phone, not only could you individually swap out older generation components for newer ones, but you could decide to leave some out, whenever you simply want to use a smaller handset.
Among other components, you should be able to swap out:
- Cameras (front / back / twin 3D)
- Battery
- GPS
- 3G / 4G / 5G modem
- Wifi (2.4 / 5 GHz / N / etc.)
- CPU
- RAM
- Storage
- SIM
- Carrier
- Screen
- Frame (small / medium / flip)
- Keyboard / trackpad
- Bluetooth
- Audio Amp / Speaker
