How To FIX Mission: Impossible. Why TV Fans Hate The Tom Cruise Movies

Like many fans of the original TV show, I HATE the Tom Cruise movies.
Full disclosure. I've only seen one of the new Mission: Impossible movies. That's the point.
As somebody who grew up watching the original Mission: Impossible TV series, I was thrilled when I heard about the 1996 movie version staring Tom Cruise. As I watched the movie, my enthusiasm for the movie turned to hate. True hate. It was sickening.
Unlike most movie adaptations, Tom Cruise decided it would be a good idea to have none of the original characters, and make the original hero of the show into the villain. What a jackass.
Fans of the original TV show remember Peter Graves as Jim Phelps, the leader of an elite team of covert government agents who take on all sorts of bad guys. In every episode, you could count on Jim Phelps and his team to save the day.
When Tom Cruise decided to take ownership of the Franchise, he decided in the first movie to make Jim Phelps a corrupt agent who kills almost all the remaining team members... except of course our NEW hero, played by Tom Cruise. What a jackass.
It's one thing to modernize an old classic, but you can't change the essence of the main characters and expect fans of the original to like it. That would be like doing a movie version of The Brady Bunch, where all of the characters are drunks, thieves and drug addicts.
The movie made tons of money, and attracted tons of new fans, but the original fans of the show were completely outraged. In my case, I decided I wouldn't see any of the sequels. I'm not alone. There are many fans of the original TV show who refuse to see any of the new movies, as long as the reputation of Jim Phelps has been tarnished.
Here's how they can fix Mission: Impossible and get old fans to see their next movie.
First. They need show that Tom Cruise's character is not the leader of the team. He answers to a higher ranking character.
Second. Then the higher ranking character pulls off his mask and reveals himself to be Jim Phelps.
Third. Then Jim Phelps reveals that he's undercover because Tom Cruise's character is a corrupt agent.
Lastly, Jim Phelps pulls the mask off Tom Cruise's character, revealing that he's a jackass. He kicks his ass and they can roll the credits.
That's it. If they use this outline as the basis of the next movie, I'll buy a ticket. Until then, they can make a ton of money in the box office from teenagers who've never even heard of the show, but fans of the original show won't buy a single ticket.
An alternate solution: Edit the first film, and dub over everyplace they mention Phelps by name. Just change it to say "Good afternoon Mr. Cruise", and instead of tarnishing Mr. Phelps's name, they'll tarnish Mr. Cruises name, which already is worthless to fans.
For the record, I'm a fan of a lot of Tom Cruise movies. I just hate what he did to this franchise.
Tom Cruise isn't just a paid actor. It was his choice to change the premise, and make it more about his new character than about an elite team headed by an honorable hero. By making Jim Phelps a disgruntled traitor he pissed off a lot of people.
He even had the audacity to offer the role of Phelps to Peter Graves in the first movie. He turned down the role when he discovered their plans to make his character a traitor. He was upset at this decision until he died in 2010.
Because of this Jackass decision, when anyone watches the original show, are they supposed to see the hero as a guy who will one day betray the team?
