Do you remember when MTV played music?
Back in the early 80s, MTV had a clear identity. They played music videos day and night, with real people introducing the songs, just like a radio station. MTV was revolutionary, and it gave the music industry a visual element that changed the way people listened to music.
The original MTV VJ's
As MTV became more popular, every artist made videos for their music, hoping to be featured on the channel. Prior to MTV, many people didn't even know what most musicians looked like. One benefit was that many unknown artists reached a larger audience if they had a cool looking video.
Like any business, it's important that people know who you are, and it's important that you know who your customers are. With MTV, it was easy. Everyone knew who they were and what kind of programming to expect. Music Television.
As time went on, somehow, they lost their identity. At first, they added a few shows like Beavis and Butthead, cartoon characters who made funny comments music videos. Eventually, that led to shows that didn't feature music... and now they don't play music at all. So what are they now?
Oddly, they still run a video music awards show.
Winning a Video Music Award used to be a big deal because artists were grateful to them for the exposure the channel gave them, and it cemented their position as a leader in the music industry. Now it's more of a joke award from a TV network that thinks music industry isn't as profitable as mindless reality TV shows.
When winning an MTV music award meant something.
