LinkedIn Profile Views Should Always Be Private.

Why does LinkedIn display who views each profile?
Social Media sites have replaced newspapers TV news as our primary source for news and information. More often than not, we will hear about breaking news on social media sites long before we read about it in the newspaper or watch it on TV.
Although I can read news stories on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, I rarely read anything I see on LinkedIn, because it's not as private.
Unlike the other sites, whenever you read a profile, LinkedIn not only tracks it, but tells the account owner you read it. That's counter productive because many people don't want to be tracked.
Let's say somebody posts something interesting about your favorite movie on Facebook, Twitter or Google+. If you're curious about the author, you might look up their profile and realize they post quite a bit of offensive material, so yo make a mental note not to follow them. No harm. No foul. If you did the same thing on LinkedIn, you just gave them an invitation to start spamming you. That's just plain crazy.
I see no reason why LinkedIn should tell people you've looked at their profile. What's the point? Do you really want everyone to know you were curious enough to read their profile? What good is it to either party?
It's gotten to the point where I never read profiles on LinkedIn because I don't want the person to contact me with some kind of spam.
The funny thing is LinkedIn actually uses this feature as a selling point for getting a paid account. They show you the names of a couple of people who read your profile and ask you to pay them to see who else has been viewing it. Isn't this supposed to be a professional site? It sounds more like a creepy high school dating site. "Did you know Missy Goldberg and 4 other girls were looking at your profile? Want to know who else?"
