5 Things every dog owner should have when they walk their dog.

Want to make the most out of your time walking your dog?
As the Boy Scouts say, "Be Prepared". Here are 5 things that every dog owner should bring along whenever you walk your dog.
1. TWO "Poop Bag" dispensers... with TWO rolls of poop bags.
Why? There is no worse feeling than running out of poop bags mid-way through a walk. If you have only one poop bag dispenser, and Fido has a particularly productive walk, you can miscalculate how many bags remain and find yourself short. Without a second (standby) dispenser, you are forced to re-open the one you started. That's not only messy and smelly, but in some cases you are literally trying to jam 2 pounds of poop into a 1 pound bag. Play it safe, bring a second roll and dispenser.
2. A FLASHLIGHT!
I can't stress enough how important a good flashlight is when walking your dog at night. A good flashlight will...
a. Make it easier to see poop you are trying to pick up.
b. Make it easier to see poop you might step on.
c. Make it easier for cars to see you.
3. A whistle or noise maker.
From time to time, you may run into another dog that is off the leash. A good whistle or noise maker is a humane way to distract the other dog and catch the attention of the dog's owner or call for help.
4. A GOOD Leash
This may sound obvious, but so many people use the wrong type of leash for their dog. A leash that is too big or too small can be uncomfortable to both you and your dog and in some cases lead to rope burns or the dog running loose, and into potential hazards.
What's worse, some people don't use a leash at all. I've been guilty of this, but I've come to realize that even the most behaved dog can be distracted and dart out unexpectedly to run towards something or somebody that grabs her attention. Don't take chances. Use a leash.
5. Treats (and sometimes water)
Treats and praise are the best way to reinforce good behavior in a dog. When your dog does something you want to reinforce, praise and reward are proven ways to insure they will repeat it. This is especially important with puppies, but your old friend will love you for it too.
Also, if you like to take long walks, it's a good idea to take along some water, especially in the summer.
