Did you know that the "Door Close" buttons on elevators don't do anything at all?
If you get into an elevator made before 1990, chances are it has a button that says "Door Close", that does absolutely nothing at all. Even if it still lights up, it doesn't do anything
That's because of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, which specifically prohibits their use so that people with wheelchairs and crutches will have more time to get into the elevator.
I could understand if they created a law that forces elevators doors to stay open longer, but the assumption here is that a law was needed to block selfish jerks from pushing it to close the door when they see a disabled person approaching.
That's pretty sick.
When the law came out, every elevator in the country that had a Door Close button had to be modified to disable the button. Oddly, there are a lot of NEW elevators that were built and installed after 1990 that still have Door Close button. The reason? They're like a Placebo. They makes people feel like they're in control.
So, next time you get into an elevator with a Door Close button, ignore it, or if it makes you feel good, push it anyway.
